Practical guide
Companions, relationships, and interactions
A guide to stable companion identity, presence, relationships, conversation, dismissal, and return.
Short answer
A companion is not merely a name in prose. They have stable identity, presence, goals, boundaries, and relationship history. Talk and dismiss actions use the normal recoverable turn flow.
What to do
- Check whether the companion is present and the action is available.
- Use conversation for a concrete subject or request, not to directly edit a relationship score.
- Read the confirmation before dismissal; the character's history remains.
Practical scenario
After an argument, a companion separates from the party. They remain a known character with shared history and can return only through a confirmed event, not an incidental narration line.
Limitations
- The client cannot create or remove a companion by itself.
- An absent character must not speak in the scene without an established communication channel.
Common question
Does dismissal erase the relationship history?
No. Lifecycle and relationship history remain; availability and presence change, not identity.
