Online text RPG — Beyond The Verge

How free-text action differs from a predefined choice tree.

Free text instead of a button tree

In a text RPG, you express a goal in your own words: negotiate, investigate, take a risk, or retreat. The system interprets intent in scene context, but the result remains bounded by rules, character state, and confirmed world facts.

Unlike a predefined choice tree, the next scene does not need to exist as a written branch. The server still records consequences and protects continuity, so flexibility does not become an endless chat without preserved causality.

Boundary and failure behavior

Narrative quality depends on provider and context. Retrying a message or recovering from a network failure must not apply the same turn twice.
